Here is the opinion of a Naturalized American Citizen to the phenomenon of 

Support Our Troops Yellow Ribbons and Patriotism.

 

American Patriotism means different things to different people

What Does American Patriotism Really Mean? American Patriotism means different things to different people. I consulted a dictionary and it says, “love for or devotion to one’s country, and it suggested looking at “nationalistic, and nationalism,” and it goes on to say that patriotism may be, “the belief that your own country is better than any other country or the desire by a group of people of the same race, origin, language etc to form an independent country.”

Being a naturalized American citizen who had to study America’s patriotic traditions and coming from a military family intimately familiar with those patriotic traditions as practiced in the Armed Services, this is the first time I ever actually looked up the academic English language meaning of the word. And I realized the English language dictionary definition of patriotism did not sound good. Not only did it not sound good, I’ve been seeing so many negative and hypocritical aspects of American patriotism since we retired from the military in my opinion. Here is an observation about Patriotism from an American living in Australia

When I came to OZ from the US I noticed a difference in the expression of ‘patriotism’. There are few Australian flags flying from private houses - very few.

It is not that they are not proud of their country here but they don't seem to need to proclaim it. When called on to fight they do so with vigor, but otherwise don't get into a daily pledge of allegiance.

I have heard Americans say that one should not make a verbal attack on the president of the United States, especially, in time of war. In OZ knocking the Prime Minister is a national sport at any time.

I have not seen one sticker in OZ that says “I support our troops”. It is quietly expected that the people in OZ support their troops – why wouldn’t they? The need to proclaim that support in public does not exist. Full Story
